Writing Contests

The Keystone

KEY·STONE /ˈkēˌstōn/ noun

  1. a central stone at the summit of an arch which locks the whole together.
  2. the central principle or part of a policy or system or the like on which all else depends.

What’s the keystone scene in your not-yet-published work — the scene that’s integral to your book? Is it the Meet-Cute? Is it the First Kiss? Is it the moment when all hope seems lost? Start polishing that scene, and stay tuned for contest details coming soon!

The Sheila

Throughout its history, VFRW was proud to host the annual Sheila Contest for excellence in unpublished opening scenes. With a comprehensive score sheet and insightful feedback from our members, the contest was a Must Enter for many. As the romance publishing landscape has changed, we made the difficult decision to sunset The Sheila in favor of moving forward with a new and exciting contest. But we’ll never forget The Sheila and all it meant to both VFRW and all of the contest entrants.
